This week, history was made in the United States as Donald Trump became the third president to be impeached following a vote from the House of Representatives on two articles of impeachment, “obstruction of congress” and “abuse of power.” Needless to say, the Trump camp and GOP members of Congress are outraged at what was a clearly partisan vote compared to the impeachments of Jackson and Clinton, in which several members of the opposing party voted to impeach.
As I mentioned in Monday’s episode, Trump still enjoys high job performance numbers and positive projections for the 2020 general election, a truly stunning fact considering, well, he is being impeached.
On Thursday, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer announced that the House will not be holding any more votes until January 7th, meaning that the House will not have the opportunity to approve impeachment managers or send the two articles of impeachment to the Senate until the beginning of the new year. After Wednesday's vote affirming the two articles of impeachment, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had floated the idea of withholding the articles from the Senate and formally declined to send them over. The Constitution, however, gives the Senate full control of an impeachment trial.
On Thursday, the House of Representatives voted to approve the USMCA, or US-Mexico-Canada-Agreement, which has been championed by President Donald Trump. Amazingly this legislation enjoyed overwhelming partisan support, passing by a vote of 385-41 with only two Republicans, 38 House Democrats, and the lone independent in the lower chamber, Justin Amash, voting against. This display of heartened bipartisanship comes just one day after the strictly partisan vote to affirm two articles of impeachment against President Trump took place in the House.
The New York Times has reported that US Attorney John Durham is looking into former CIA Director John Brennan, who has been tasked with investigating the origins of the Mueller investigation. Durham has reportedly requested emails, call logs, emails, and other documents from Brennan's time at the CIA. Brennan has long been accused by many on the right as being one of the chief architects of the Spygate scandal so this is seen as a key victory in the efforts to expose interference on the part of the Obama administration into the 2016 election process.
Franklin Graham, son of the late Billy Graham, is slamming Christianity Today, the magazine his father founded, for publishing an op-ed backing Trump's impeachment. He penned a response on Facebook Friday, also revealing that his father, the celebrated evangelist, had voted for Trump in 2016. The younger Graham has long been an emphatic supporter of the president, and also took the opportunity to slam the impeachment process.
A woman in the UK who was removed from her job over tweets in which she declared that people cannot change their biological sex has lost an employment tribunal. Maya Forstater’s contract was not renewed with the think tank Center for Global Development after tweets she posted questioning government proposals to allow people to decide their own gender. If she had won her case, it would have set the precedent that employers could not fire someone for believing there are two genders. The employment judge ruled that her views were “incompatible with human dignity and fundamental rights of others.” She said following the ruling that "All I ever wanted on this was for people to be able to talk about the policy questions around sex and gender identity in a normal, open, democratic way"
All right well I don’t know about you but I’d love to just dive right into our prayer, because we need it!
Lord, we come to you with hearts full of love for you and for your people, for our country and our world, with an earnest prayer to empower us to shine your light into these situations. It can be amazing how quickly things seem to be changing for the worst and we never know your ultimate plan Lord but we do ask that you would bring peace and healing to our world. That your Kingdom would grow in the midst of high-powered politics and the rejection of your design for humanity and that those who follow you will find ways to infuse the Gospel into all that they do, and that they would be used to further Your Kingdom.
I thank you Lord for the ladies listening right now Lord, and pray that you would equip them to be bold Christian mamas, to raise their children up to know you Lord, and to navigate this chaotic world with wisdom and with strength.
We thank you Lord for your son’s sacrifice on the cross, that our sins may be forgiven and that we may live eternally with you. I pray that everyone listening is touched by this Good News and lives to glorify your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, we pray.
